Are Poker Cash Games Different From Tournaments?

If you’re a poker enthusiast, you should by now know that there are tens, if not hundreds of types of the game, played across the world today. There are hundreds of free poker sites that offer a brilliant experience for poker players to play real money poker, every day. Each of these sites also feature several tales, each with a different type of the game such as Texas Holdem, Omaha Holdem, Omaha hi-lo etc. where players can pick and choose the type of game-play that they enjoy most.

Further, there are different levels of stakes that players can choose to play for real money poker. There are high stakes games where the players invest high amounts - and while the risk is higher, so are the payoffs. There are medium and low stakes games, as well - depending on the mood, risk-taking abilities and the preferences of each player. On the other hand, there are free poker sites and freeroll poker tournaments where the player doesn’t really have to invest any amount to begin playing the game. That wouldn’t stop them from actually making real money, from the games.

But overall, in the online poker world you’ll observe that games are of two major types. One - there are cash games; and two - there are tournaments.

This article is all about the difference between these two types of real money poker that you’ll get to play, on free poker sites - and how you should prepare differently for each of them. So, what are the differences afterall?

  1. Tables: Cash-games are usually played on a single table. All players come together and pool in their pot amounts and begin the game. Tournaments are usually spread out across multiple tables - they begin with smaller teams playing on single tables - and eventually winners from each table move on to the next tables to play games with the other winners.
  2. Buy-ins: Typically to enter tournaments of real money poker, all contestants are required to basically pay the same fee. For that given amount, everyone is given the same share of chips that they can use across the tournament. In contrast, in cash games players keep contributing to the pool amount and buying chips from they poker bankrolls, as per their preferences.
  3. Winning: In cash games, players are allowed to quit the game at any point - based on their comfort levels and exchange their remaining chips for money from the poker house. In tournaments however, players continue to play the game until one player gets hold of all the poker chips - and is declared the winner.
